2024 Spotlight Angel, Nora: A Story of Love, Strength and Holy Angels
“Nora is a hero. She is a warrior,” beamed Nora’s grandmother and guardian, Kelly. “Nora is everything. She makes me happy when I’m sad. Nora makes me continue when I want to give up. Nora is always cheerful no matter what. She is unconditional love.”
Powerful words about our 2024 Spotlight Angel, Nora. She embodies everything that is pure and uplifting. Her mere presence brings joy to those around her, and she serves as a reminder of the strength that lies within the human spirit.
Nora’s journey began with a bittersweet twist. Born healthy, her family’s joy was abruptly replaced with worry when she was diagnosed with spinal meningitis before she even left the hospital. Her tiny frame was connected to a ventilator. A doctor told the family to prepare for the worst.
Our little warrior battled through and eventually left the hospital. Years later, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder creating new challenges for those who loved and cared for her.
Kelly’s journey took a toll on her own well-being. A working grandmother, she faced the hardships of finding appropriate care for Nora. Daycares proved inadequate. At times, Kelly would sneak Nora into work, hiding the young child under her desk. It all became too much. In a moment of desperation, Kelly discovered Holy Angels.
In Kelly’s own words, “If I’m being 100% honest, I don’t think I would be here without Holy Angels. I was at my breaking point, and I didn’t have anywhere else to turn or go. Holy Angels was truly a lifeline for both of us.”
Nora was four years old when she first arrived at Holy Angels. Eventually this would become home for both Nora and Kelly. As years passed, Nora thrived and blossomed. The once sleepless nights filled with worry for Kelly transformed into moments of laughter and joy. Holy Angels provided not only care for Nora but also a sense of extended family for Kelly.
Nora is now enrolled in the Holy Angels school. She loves using the iPad and a switch to communicate. Nora LOVES “girl time,” getting her nails painted by the team of caregivers. Her laughter is a Mercy Moment as it echoes down the hallway and puts a smile on the faces of anyone who hears it.
“I love these people. I don’t have extended family. This is my extended family,” Kelly said. “I love everybody here. There are not enough words I could say to thank everyone at Holy Angels for loving and caring for my Nora.”
As we celebrate Nora, our Spotlight Angel of 2024, let us also celebrate the love of a grandmother, the strength of a little warrior, and the transformative power of Holy Angels – a place where miracles happen every day.
